Start Here – An Introduction to the Spiritual Gifts

Aaron August 21, 2020

I am so excited that you have decided to join me in Discovering Your Spiritual Gifts!

I believe that understanding and using our gifts for the glory of God is ultimately what we were made to do, and so the number of individuals understanding and using their gifts in the church is one of the most prolific markers of health in the body of Christ.

In this course, we’re going to explore three different broad categories of Spiritual Gifts.

The first category is called the gifts of calling, or Calling Gifts.

The Calling Gifts help us understand what specific role in the body of Christ we were created to do.

We find the Calling Gifts lifted in Ephesians 4:11 which says, “these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the Apostles, the Prophets, the Evangelists, the Pastors (Shepherds), and the Teachers.”

These Five Calling Gifts are sometimes referred to as APEST Gifts, and so one of the first things that you’ll be doing in this course is taking the APEST Assessment.

In this assessment, you will be given a statement and you will have to decide whether it sounds a lot like you, or not like you at all on a scale of 1 to 5. In order to get the best results, you’ll want to go with your gut reaction, because if you think about it too much you  might begin answering in the ways in which you believe you should be or hope to become. We’re looking for the way that the Holy Spirit is working in your life right now, and so it is best to answer as quickly as possible because as Jeremiah 17:9 says, “the heart can be deceitful above all things.”

Beyond the calling gifts, there are two other sets of giftings as well. We have the Serving Gifts, which can be found in Romans 12:6-8, and I love to refer to these as the “just do it” gifts, because these gifts were given to us specifically in order to build up the church and our world and have real, lasting consequences when we neglect to use them.

We also have the Charismatic Gifts, which you can find in 1 Corinthians 12:7-11. These gifts allow us to do some pretty miraculous things which show God’s glory in the world and give everyone a glimpse of what life in the Kingdom is really like.

In order to discover your service and charismatic gifts, you will be taking our Service and Charismatic gifts assessment, which is a little longer than the first, because it consists of 25 possible spiritual gifts that you might have.

Just like the first assessment, this assessment gives you a statement and a scale of 1 to 5 to determine whether something is a lot like you or not like you at all. The key to this assessment, once again, is to answer as quickly as you possible can.

After finishing these two assessments, I have prepared a digital worksheet for you to take a look at your results and where you are currently serving both inside and outside the church, to help you determine if you are working within your giftedness, or to explore if God might be calling you to something new and exciting.

After you have completed all of that, you will be invited to join me for an online workshop where I will help you make sense of some of your spiritual gifts and answer any questions that you may have.

I am so excited to start this journey with you, and to see how the Holy Spirit is working in your life and in the life of our church.
